The brief

Discrete echoes of one movement left behind it, spacing tracking the speed of the motion and brightness decaying with each step back in time.

Why it's hard

The model produces evenly spaced, equally bright clones that never fade, and bleeds ghosting onto the still background as if a filter had been applied to everything.

The craft key

Decay physics: each echo dimmer AND slightly later. Anything that stayed still must leave no trail at all.

Handheld, 50mm at f/2.0, a darkened rehearsal room lit only by one bare bulb and the amber glow of a bar heater. Torn gaffer tape and a coiled cable lie in the near foreground. A dancer whips one arm across the frame and discrete exposures of that arm stay behind it — five or six echoes, each measurably dimmer than the one ahead of it, each further behind in time, so they spread apart where the movement accelerated and bunch where it slowed. The echoes decay away completely inside about a second. This is a long-shutter accumulation, not a uniform ghosting filter: anything that stayed still leaves no trail at all, and the brightest echo carries genuine shutter smear. Why it's built this way

Two rules make a strobe trail read as physics rather than a plugin: each echo is dimmer than the one in front, and echo spacing tracks the speed of the movement. The negative rule matters just as much — static parts of the frame must produce no trail, which is what a real multiple exposure would do. Decay inside a second keeps it a motion record instead of a permanent smear.
