The Breach

Forty tons leaves the water, hangs, and comes back down. Get the physics right.

The brief

A humpback whale powers up from below, clears the surface, rotates through the air and crashes back down. Shoot it from the water line with a shoreline behind. The whole shot lives or dies on the moment of impact.

Why it's hard

Models routinely give humpbacks the wrong flipper length, the wrong number of throat pleats, or a dolphin body. Then the water has to behave like water at enormous scale — and splash simulation at that mass is where most attempts collapse.

Success criteria

  • Pectoral fins are roughly a third of body length — humpbacks have the longest in the ocean.
  • The whale carries momentum: it decelerates going up and accelerates coming down.
  • Splash volume matches the mass displacing it, and spray reads at the right scale.

Why it's built this way

Anatomy is specified as a checklist because the default whale is a generic short-finned cetacean — naming the species, the tubercles, the barnacles and the flipper-to-body ratio is the only reliable fix. The breach angle and the twist are stated as biomechanics rather than as a look, and the long lens plus the operator's late reframe supplies the human-camera evidence that a real boat shot always has. Vary the clearance fraction: three-quarters reads real, full-body reads like a poster.

Watch for

A missile-straight vertical launch with no rotation and no falling-back phase, on a whale with dolphin-short flippers; if the flippers are wrong, put the flipper-length ratio in the first sentence rather than mid-prompt.
