Mother and Calf

The single hardest animal in generative video. Nobody gets the calf right.

The brief

A humpback mother and her calf swim together underwater, the calf riding just above and behind her rostrum, sunlight shafting down through blue water. Slow, calm, enormous.

Why it's hard

For reasons nobody has fully explained, models are dramatically worse at whale calves than adults. You get miniature adults with wrong proportions, fused fins, or a second head. Treat the calf as the entire challenge — the mother is the easy half.

Success criteria

  • The calf has calf proportions — shorter rostrum, rounder body, not a shrunken adult.
  • Both animals have four correctly attached appendages plus a fluke. Count them.
  • Light shafts move with the surface above rather than sitting statically in the water.

It is not a smooth dolphin shape, not a round cartoon, not a shrunken adult on adult timing — the calf beats its fluke faster and drifts off her line, then corrects. Why it's built this way

This prompt fights a known failure directly: it states the correct proportions positively, then names the three wrong shapes the model reaches for by default. Note the behavioural specificity too — a real calf swims with a faster tail beat and wanders off the mother's line, and describing that motion difference does more for believability than any adjective could. Vary the depth and the calf's position (above the rostrum versus alongside her flipper) and watch how much the size read changes.

Watch for

The classic calf failure — a stubby, big-eyed, short-finned mini-whale swimming in perfect lockstep with the mother; if you get it, drop the mother entirely for one generation and get the calf's anatomy right alone before pairing them.
