Not a Dugong

The brief

A manatee hovers over a seagrass bed in shallow, silty water, grazing slowly, using its flippers to walk itself forward. Warm light from a low sun, particles drifting in the water column.

Why it's hard

Ask for a manatee and you will very often get a dugong. The difference is the tail: manatees have a single rounded paddle like a spoon, dugongs have a notched fluke like a dolphin. Models blend the two constantly.

Success criteria

  • The tail is a single rounded paddle. If it is notched or forked, you generated a dugong.
  • The snout is broad and downturned for bottom grazing, not tapered.
  • The animal moves with slow buoyant momentum — manatees never dart.

Why it's built this way

The manatee-versus-dugong distinction lives entirely in the tail and the snout, so both are stated with the wrong answer named explicitly — "not a forked dolphin fluke" does more work than any amount of praise for the correct shape. The algae patches and propeller scars are the material-specificity requirement, and they also read as a real animal with a history rather than a clean asset. Vary the water clarity: silt and grass drifting across the lens is your depth, so do not clean it up.

Watch for

A dugong with a forked tail, or a seal-shaped body with visible ears; check the tail first on every generation, because it is the single feature the model gets wrong most often.
