Lunge Feed

The largest biomechanical event on Earth, and the throat has to expand correctly.

The brief

A humpback lunges up through a dense cloud of krill with its mouth wide open and throat pleats ballooning outward, bubble-net columns rising around it. Frame it from below against the bright surface.

Why it's hard

The throat expansion is a specific, unusual deformation that models rarely render — they tend to give you an open mouth on a rigid body. The krill cloud is also a particle problem layered on top of a creature problem.

Success criteria

  • Ventral pleats visibly expand and then relax — the throat is not a rigid surface.
  • Krill behave as a reactive cloud, parting around the animal rather than sitting as texture.
  • Backlight through the surface separates the whale from the water column.

Why it's built this way

The expanded throat pleats are the whole shot, so they get the most material detail — pouch width, baleen, spillover — while everything else stays subordinate. Letting the lunge overshoot the frame is a deliberate imperfection: a perfectly composed lunge is the tell that no operator was there. Vary the bubble-net diameter and the number of animals; a single whale is easier for the model to keep anatomically honest than a pod.

Watch for

A closed-mouth breach with no pleat expansion, which is what you get when the model treats "lunge feed" as a synonym for "jump"; describe the open mouth and ballooning pleats before you use the word lunge at all.
