Density is the clock. Fresh or forgotten — the steam says which.

The brief

Steam whose density and speed encode temperature, and therefore elapsed time — a fast dense column early, a thin hesitant wisp later, in the same frame.

Why it's hard

The model renders identical decorative steam throughout, so temperature never changes and the passage of time reads as nothing at all.

The craft key

Let the effect narrate. Volume encodes temperature, temperature encodes time, and no dialogue has to say it.

Why it's built this way

Steam carries information for free if you let it: volume and speed encode temperature, and temperature encodes elapsed time. Putting both states in one frame turns the effect into a piece of narration that no dialogue or caption has to do. The cooled skin on the surface is the corroborating detail that keeps the model honest about which state is which.
