La densidad es el reloj. Recién servido u olvidado: el vapor lo dice.
El encargo
Vapor cuya densidad y velocidad codifican la temperatura y, por tanto, el tiempo transcurrido: una columna densa y rápida al principio, un hilo tenue y dubitativo después, en el mismo encuadre.
Por qué es difícil
El modelo representa el mismo vapor decorativo todo el rato, así que la temperatura nunca cambia y el paso del tiempo no se lee en absoluto.
Deja que el efecto narre. El volumen codifica la temperatura, la temperatura codifica el tiempo y ningún diálogo tiene que decirlo.

Steam carries information for free if you let it: volume and speed encode temperature, and temperature encodes elapsed time. Putting both states in one frame turns the effect into a piece of narration that no dialogue or caption has to do. The cooled skin on the surface is the corroborating detail that keeps the model honest about which state is which.
Identical thick decorative steam in both halves of the shot, so the temperature never changes and the passage of time reads as nothing.
