SL-92 / Time & Camera Devices

The Through-Solid Move

Straight through a wall into the next room — and the inside of the wall is designed.

The brief

A continuous move passing through a wall or a door into the next space, where the interior of the transition is textured and specific rather than skipped.

Why it's hard

A dark blur or a dissolve appears at the moment of penetration, plus a speed hitch that exposes where two clips were joined.

The craft key

The interior of the transition is designed, not skipped — and the speed through the threshold never changes.

Starter prompt

Built with the CEMI MediaMax system for Google Veo 3.1. Prompts stay in English — that is the language these models take instructions in. Treat it as a starting point and start varying it.

the-through-solid-move
Single continuous move, no cut, 24mm at f/2.8, from a tenement stairwell into the flat beyond. The camera pushes past a dusty banister and a bicycle wheel in the foreground, reaches a painted-shut door, and carries straight through it. The interior of the passage is designed, not skipped: roughly half a second inside the door's guts — strata of old paint seen in section, splintered pine, a dead wasp between the panels, dust turning in a keyhole's thin beam — before the far side opens onto a kitchen with a running tap. The move never slows or stutters at the threshold, and keeps the operator's slight forward gait throughout. Alfonso Cuarón's unbroken traversals of space. Lit by stairwell bulb, then keyhole light, then window daylight — three distinct colour temperatures inside one move. Anamorphic barrel distortion at the wide end.

Why it's built this way

The transition is the shot: audiences forgive impossible geometry when the impossible part is textured and specific, and reject it when it is a black smear. Three named light temperatures across the move give the traversal a spatial argument, so the two rooms feel genuinely adjacent. Keeping constant speed through the threshold prevents the giveaway hitch where two clips were joined.

Watch for

A dark blur or dissolve at the moment of penetration — the interior of the wall skipped entirely — plus a speed hitch that exposes the join.
