Pitch, swing, contact, gone. Four biomechanical events in two seconds.

The brief

A pitcher delivers, the batter loads and swings, the bat meets the ball, and it leaves the park. Cover it from behind the plate or along the third-base line — but the contact frame has to be in the shot.

Why it's hard

Pitching is a full-body kinetic chain — legs, hips, trunk, shoulder, wrist, in that order. Models tend to animate the arm alone. Then bat-on-ball contact needs a genuine impulse: the ball must reverse direction in a frame, not curve around.

Success criteria

  • The pitch sequences correctly from the ground up — it starts in the legs, not the arm.
  • The ball reverses direction on contact with a visible impulse, no floating arc.
  • The bat stays a rigid object: no bending, stretching, or passing through the ball.

Why it's built this way

Both biomechanical chains are named in order — hips before hands for the hitter, hips before arm for the pitcher — because sequence is what separates a real swing from a mannequin turn. The camera deliberately stays with the body and finds the ball late, which is how a human operator actually behaves and is the opposite of the model's instinct to track the ball perfectly. Vary the lens: a 50mm puts you in the play, a 200mm makes it reportage.

Watch for

Contact that does not read — the ball passing through the bat, or the swing finishing with no deformation and no impact frame; slow only the contact moment with a brief ramp rather than shooting the whole clip in slow motion.
