Refraction ripples bounded to the column of rising hot air above a kiln mouth, asphalt or an engine — with a straight background line for them to bend.

Why it's hard

The moment shimmer appears across the whole image it stops being refraction and becomes a filter applied to a picture.

Name the source, its geometry, and a straight line behind it. Distortion needs something to bend to be legible.

Why it's built this way

Shimmer is a refraction gradient, so it only exists in the column of rising hot air — the moment it appears over the whole frame it becomes a filter. Naming the source (kiln mouth), its geometry (one metre up, door-width) and a straight background line gives the model something to bend, which is what makes the distortion legible. The operator stepping back is the physics receipt: the heat is real enough to move a person.

Watch for

A global heat-haze wobble applied to the entire image — sky and foreground pots rippling too — instead of a bounded column above the kiln door.
