heat-shimmer-at-the-source
Handheld medium shot, 40mm vintage Cooke Panchro at f/2.8, on a working brick kiln in a village pottery yard at flat overcast midday. A stack of unfired terracotta pots sits in the dirty foreground, rim-chipped and dusted with grey clay slip, thrown soft at the frame's left edge. A potter in a scorched canvas apron swings the kiln's iron door open; the air directly above the door mouth, and for roughly one metre upward, warps into visible refraction ripples that bend the straight mortar line of the far wall behind it. Nowhere else distorts — sky, pots, and the yard's cracked concrete stay optically clean. The operator holds with breathing micro-oscillation and re-frames a few degrees as the heat pushes them back a step. Lit only by overcast daylight and the kiln's orange interior. Roger Deakins' unglamorous industrial daylight. Faint halation on the door's glow.

Por qué está construido así

Shimmer is a refraction gradient, so it only exists in the column of rising hot air — the moment it appears over the whole frame it becomes a filter. Naming the source (kiln mouth), its geometry (one metre up, door-width) and a straight background line gives the model something to bend, which is what makes the distortion legible. The operator stepping back is the physics receipt: the heat is real enough to move a person.

Ojo con esto

A global heat-haze wobble applied to the entire image — sky and foreground pots rippling too — instead of a bounded column above the kiln door.
